- Inside pocket decoration (heat transfer vinyl)
Steps To Complete
Cutting Instructions:
The exterior passport holder piece and the small pocket have heat transfer vinyl details on them. Position the exterior passport holder piece so that the small strap is facing to the left, then use a heat press or dry iron with a pressing cloth to adhere the vinyl in place. We recommend following the manufacturer’s instructions. |
Repeat the above process to adhere the decorative heat transfer vinyl pieces to the small interior pocket. |
Now that the vinyl details have been bonded to the appropriate faux leather pieces, it is time to sew your passport holder together! Because stitching will be visible from both sides, wind a bobbin with the same thread being used in the top needle. |
Traditional straight pins leave permanent holes in materials such as faux leather. As a good alternative, we recommend temporary spray adhesive to hold your pieces in place while sewing. Sewing clips are another good option, but for this demonstration we will be using adhesive. Most temporary spray adhesives will wear off after a couple days. |
Fold the passport holder interior piece in half and, using a pressing cloth, iron the fold to make a clean crease. Repeat this step with the passport holder's exterior piece. |
Spray the back side of the interior small pocket with temporary adhesive, then position it with the lower left side of the interior passport holder piece, lining up the edges. |
Then sew a 1/8” seam along the right side of the pocket piece, attaching the pocket piece to the interior passport holder piece. |
Spray the back side of the passport pocket piece. Position it on the right side of the interior passport holder piece, matching up the corners and edges. Do not sew this pocket down yet. |
Place the passport holder exterior piece right-side down with the small strap facing to the right. |
Spray the back side of the passport holder interior piece with temporary adhesive. Position the interior piece so that it matches the corners, pre-cut snap holes, and edges on the left side. |
The interior passport holder piece is slightly shorter than the exterior piece so that the material does not buckle when folded in half. Hold the left side down while lifting the right-side exterior piece until the edges of the interior and exterior passport holder pieces align. Then lightly press them together to prepare for the next step. |
Starting at the center crease, sew a 1/8” seam along the top, right side, and bottom of the passport holder. Then repeat with the left side. |
Take the passport holder and locate the two small circular cut outs where the strap will attach. One will be in the solid body of the passport holder, and the other will be at the end of the strap. These small holes are for the snaps. The snap’s posts should fit through them, but the holes can be made wider with a craft knife if necessary. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to set the pretty half of the snap on the strap, and the other half in the solid area. |
If you used spray adhesive, use your fingers to open the pockets. Forcing them open will help the glue wear off faster. |
This completes the passport holder. Repeat these steps to make a variety of passport holders to use or give as gifts. Make sure to not resize this design, as it is sided specifically to fit a standard passport.
